Thain was a member of the called classic line-up from 1972 to 1975. He joined in the middle of US tour to replace Mark Clarke. He was fired because of his drug problems and he died in drug overduse soon after that.

Before joining Heep Thain was in several bands in his home country New Zealand. Having move to England he was a member of Keef Hartley band and played on five albums. There was also some session work done for other artists.
